La vergine e i filosofi. Platone nelle vite inglesi di santa Caterina

Abstract

Nella sua Vita, Caterina d’Alessandria fa riferimento a Platone durante il suo dibattito con cinquanta sapienti pagani. L’argomento platonico a sostegno dell’Incarnazione, così come presentato da Caterina, presenta una formulazione particolarmente oscura in una redazione del South English Legendary. Il confronto con passi paralleli della tradizione agiografica in medio inglese dimostra che la maggior parte dei compilatori scelse di omettere del tutto questo riferimento platonico. Tuttavia, la Gilte Legende e lo Scottish Legendary presentano varianti preziose che meritano ulteriore indagine. Il presente articolo si propone di ricostruire l’origine di questa crux e di esaminare le modalità con cui il platonismo cristiano fu recepito nell’agiografia in medio inglese, prendendo come caso di studio le Vite di Santa Caterina. Inoltre, esso esplora attraverso l’esempio dello Scottish Legendary come un agiografo possa aver collegato il passo apologetico al Timeo di Platone o ai suoi commenti, che sembrano costituire le fonti ultime dell’argomentazione. Infine, si offrono alcune conclusioni riguardo al trattamento dei contenuti dottrinali da parte degli agiografi del periodo medio inglese, individuando tre approcci ricorrenti e una possibile gerarchia tra essi.
